New Captain Congo!

Excuse this non-Krill intrusion, but here's big news: The new Captain Congo adventure, "Captain Congo and the Maharaja's Monkey" is released today!

As last time, it's penned by acclaimed children's author Ruth Starke, contains 48 full-colour beautifully hardbound pages, and retails for a very reasonable AU$24.95. Published by Working Title Press, distributed by Penguin, and available in the usual places throughout ANZ plus many an online retailer. Nothing much happening on the surface, but underneath the new site is being loaded up and all the pages of "In For The Krill" are being archived. All the while writing and drawing the next chapter and resisting the urge to redraw slabs of the old ones, but sometimes I weaken and feel compelled to insert a new page. This can happen for a few reasons, but in this case foremost among them was the fact that I love drawing Pete's square head and wanted the opportunity to start putting more chops in the background.

Krill's mother-site Panic Productions, has undergone a DIY facelift. Fresh, and only a little lumpy and scarred.

Giddy with the thrill of using idiot-friendly web-building applications (don't take it personally iWeb, but I'm only with you because you're easy), this very site will be undergoing a major renovation shortly.

If I walked into your kitchen waving a hammer, wearing a disconcertingly clean tool belt, and used those very words, it would indeed be cause for alarm. But trust me, this will be good. More Krill pages, more often, easier to read. I believe it's called webcomics.

Expect to be up and running, or at least stumbling at a cracking pace, soon. Same url. You need not do anything but wait. If you're a reader of IFTK, you should be used to that.

Where I've been hiding

Boy, have updates on this site dropped off lately.
Here's why:That's 48 pages of "Captain Congo and the Maharaja's Monkey" laid on my studio floor (only willing to do that after all have been safely scanned and archived). That doesn't include the thumbnails, manuscript annotations, and pencil roughs which would make this carpet about three times thicker. And of course it doesn't show the brilliant colour work of Bernie Mireault.

The point of this is to justify to myself and the five or six others that may care, my absence from Krill. Abandoning an ongoing story for many months is poor form, I know, but at least I have been spending my time with another penguin.

"Maharaja's Monkey" will be released later this year. In the meantime, the first volume, "Captain Congo and the Crocodile King" has been nominated for the Childrens Book Council of Australia's "Picture Book of the Year" and has gone into it's second printing. Still at fine (and not so fine) bookshops.

Back in the Krill, very soon.

Treading Water

On the verge of posting a new chapter, but Jill's suffering from a temporary lack of broadband, so that poots a deelay in the profreeading. Will fill the time by posting a couple pictures.
I needed some spot art for the second issue and that's led to creating a series of character images. If nothing else, they'll help everyone keep track of the similarly dressed cast. They might make cool cards, or coasters, maybe kitchen tiles. Ideas, anyone?

The aforementioned Captain Congo and the Crocodile King was successfully launched last week and is now available at fine bookshops throughout Australia, (and probably even a few crappy ones).

I'm a little in love with issuu. I didn't think there would be a readily-available, easy-to-use, pdf platform that was going to offer a worthwhile reading experience. Virtual can ever replace the actual, but this is a pretty good compromise that gets a publication out there without the needless felling of trees and the potential for a garage full of comic books.

Of course we'll keep offering the real thing, but I'd like your thoughts on reading Krill at issuu, not to mention your thoughts on Krill itself.

Day Job

Where's the next chapter? Forming as slowly as ice in a spa, thanks largely to the huge demands of my day job. Fortunately my day job has been pretty enjoyable lately and while it doesn't involve Krill, it does have a comic book penguin.

"Captain Congo and the Crocodile King" is the latest book I've illustrated for the Australian children's book publisher Working Title. Not just a book, but a comic book. You know, for kids.

Written by Ruth Starke, this 48 page book features the Captain's first adventure as he is sent by The Agency to track a missing anthropologist, leading to the crocodile infested jungles of the Omo River. Best of all, he's accompanied by Pug, an occasionally sardonic but stalwart sidekick in the form of a King penguin. (Not to be confused with Krill's Emperor Penguin, but we know all about that now after the last post.)

I put the book to bed last night. Checking of proofs and a few revisions and tweaks are doubtless still on my schedule, but at least now the day job won't be intruding on the night work.

Remember kids; never quit your day job.

'Tis the Season to be Squidly

Krill's Animated Origins

The animated short "Black and White Red All Over" can be viewed in it's entirety online at Panic's Vimeo page.

(here's a small screen version)

While the release of this film pre-dates the graphic novel by four years, the larger epic of Krill was conceived before the animation. The film was intended to stand alone while also serving to put forward the idea of a larger project.

The look and narrative has evolved somewhat in the meantime, but it does establish the penguin-noir milleu.

The Ice Forms

In for the Krill is a graphic novel, in about 10 or so chapters, covering the animated feature film of the same name.

This project has been rattling around for quite awhile, and certainly the full history will appear sometime on this site, but despite the alleged patience of animators, we're tired of waiting to start our story. The production budget of comics is a few dollars worth of paper and ink, and that's only if you choose to use them. Publishing online costs are covered by the electricity bill and web connection.

"Guerilla" style productions aside, the minimum budget for an animated feature film is around 7 million Euros, 5 million pounds, or 20 million Australian dollars.

We'll start with the graphic novel. Here,very soon.
